What is a heat pump hot water system?

A heat pump hot water system works like a reverse air conditioner. It pulls heat from the surrounding air and uses it to heat your water, rather than generating heat directly with electricity. That makes it two to three times more efficient than a conventional electric storage system.

For a typical Northern Beaches household, switching from electric storage to a heat pump can cut hot water running costs by 60 to 70 per cent per year.

Is it right for your home?

Heat pump systems suit most Northern Beaches homes well. Sydney's mild coastal climate means the system runs efficiently year-round. A few things worth checking before you book:

  • Space: the outdoor compressor unit needs adequate clearance and ventilation — a site visit confirms this quickly

  • Switchboard: before any installation, we check your switchboard is safe to work with — confirming there is no asbestos in or around the board, that service fuses are present and functional, and that circuit protection is in place. If anything needs attention, we tell you before the job starts. Most Northern Beaches homes are fine.

  • Placement: the compressor produces low-level noise, so we advise on positioning away from bedroom windows

  • Solar compatibility: if you have solar panels, a Wi-Fi-enabled system can be timed to heat during peak solar hours, reducing running costs further

NSW government rebates

NSW Home Energy Saver Loan Interest-free finance of up to $15,000 for eligible NSW homeowners, with up to 10 years to repay and no fees. Available now. Heat pump hot water systems are an eligible upgrade. Income threshold: combined household income of $210,000 or less.

NSW Home Energy Saver Discount (expected later 2026) A separate discount of up to $4,000 is expected to open later in 2026, for households earning $80,000 or less or those holding an eligible concession card. Unlike the loan, this money does not need to be repaid.

Important: if you may be eligible for both, it is worth waiting for the discount to open before taking the loan. We can help you work out which applies before you commit to anything.

Federal STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) may also apply depending on the system, reducing your upfront cost further at the point of sale.

What the job involves

The existing plumbing connections are typically reused, and we handle the electrical side. For gas to heat pump conversions, a licensed plumber is needed for gas disconnection — our plumber partner handles this as part of the same job.

  • How much does a heat pump hot water system cost to install on the Northern Beaches? Installed cost typically ranges from $4,500 to $7,500, depending on the brand, tank size, and any switchboard work required. This includes both the electrical and plumbing work. After applicable NSW rebates, the net cost can be significantly lower. We provide a fixed quote with everything itemised before you proceed.

  • Do I need a switchboard upgrade? Not always. We check your switchboard as part of every quote. If the board has asbestos, missing service fuses, or inadequate circuit protection, that needs to be addressed first. We will tell you upfront and include any required work in the price.

  • How long does a heat pump hot water system last? A quality system, well installed, typically lasts 10 to 15 years.  Rheem and iStore all have strong track records in Australian conditions.

  • Is the system noisy? The outdoor compressor produces a low hum, similar to a ducted air conditioner. Correct placement, which we advise on at the quoting stage, means it is not an issue for most homes.

  • Can I run my heat pump on solar? Yes. Wi-Fi-enabled systems can be programmed to heat water during your peak solar production window, which typically means running almost entirely on free solar energy.
