A Randwick homeowner added a Tesla Powerwall 3 to their existing Powerwall 2 last week. The goal was simple: more storage. They already had 13.5kWh from the original Powerwall 2 install and wanted more buffer. More nights covered, more resilience if the grid went down. Adding the Powerwall 3 brought total battery storage to 27kWh. The job also required a gateway upgrade, and that part is worth understanding.

Why this homeowner added a second battery

The existing Powerwall 2 was doing its job. But the household's energy use had grown, and a single 13.5kWh battery wasn't covering overnight consumption as consistently as it once did. The homeowner wasn't chasing solar self-consumption figures or a new technology. They wanted more storage, full stop. A second battery was the most direct answer.

The Powerwall 3 pairs directly with an existing Powerwall 2. Tesla designed the two systems to work together through the same Gateway, appearing as one combined system in the Tesla app. No extra monitoring hardware, no separate configuration. The two units operate as a single 27kWh battery.

How the Powerwall 3 pairs with a Powerwall 2

The Tesla Gateway is the brain of a Powerwall system. It sits between your solar, your batteries, and the grid, managing charge and discharge cycles, handling backup switching when the grid goes down, and reporting everything to the Tesla app. When you add a second Powerwall, the Gateway coordinates both units together.

On a three-phase property, the Gateway needs to match. This home's switchboard had previously been upgraded to three-phase by another contractor.

Single-phase vs three-phase — what it means for battery charging

On a single phase home in Sydney. One live wire from the grid, a maximum import/export capacity of 10kW. Three-phase has three live wires, roughly three times the capacity, with around 30kW available for import or export.

For battery charging, this matters more as your storage capacity grows. The Powerwall 3 charges at up to 5kW on a single-phase connection, which is fine for most homes. On three-phase, it can charge at up to 5kW per phase, for a combined charge rate of up to 15kW. When you have 27kWh of total storage, that faster charging rate means you can fill both batteries from solar on a productive day, or top them up from the grid quickly before a storm.

On a single-phase home, a Powerwall 3 is still excellent. The charging rate limitation only becomes noticeable at larger storage capacities. For a home with 27kWh across two batteries, three-phase charging makes a meaningful difference to how quickly the system recovers after a cloudy day or a grid outage.

What the install involved

A day's work. We upgraded the Tesla Gateway to the three-phase version, mounted the Powerwall 3 alongside the existing Powerwall 2 on the external sandstone wall, and commissioned both units through the Tesla app. The two batteries now appear as a single 27kWh system, with charge levels, backup settings, and scheduling all managed in one place.

For a home in Randwick, 27kWh is a substantial buffer. Average household consumption on the Northern Beaches runs around 20kWh per day. On a well-solarised home, a system this size covers overnight use comfortably, with reserve for a cloudy day or a short grid outage.

We assess phase supply and Gateway compatibility on every site visit before recommending a battery system. It's the kind of thing that looks simple on paper but matters a great deal to whether the backup power actually works as expected. We're SAA-accredited and have been Tesla Powerwall Certified Installers for a number of years, including two NECA Gold Medal wins and Northern beaches Council Sustainable bussiness of the year, 107 5 star reviews.
