Can I Add a Battery to My Existing Solar System?

Yes — But It Depends on Your Inverter

The short answer is yes, you can almost always add a battery to an existing solar system. The longer answer depends on what inverter you currently have. There are three common scenarios on the Northern Beaches:

Battery-ready or hybrid inverter

If you have a Sungrow SH series or Fronius GEN24 inverter, you're already set up for a battery. Adding one is straightforward — no inverter replacement needed, just the battery itself and a day of installation.

Standard string inverter (most older systems)

Many homes on the Northern Beaches have a standard string inverter installed 5 to 12 years ago. These aren't battery-ready. Your two options are: replace the inverter with a hybrid model that supports DC-coupled batteries, or add an AC-coupled battery like the Tesla Powerwall 3, which connects on the AC side and works with any existing inverter. The Powerwall 3 is often the simpler and more cost-effective path for a retrofit.

Microinverter systems (e.g. Enphase IQ)

Enphase microinverter systems use AC coupling for battery storage. The Enphase Encharge battery integrates directly with the Enphase ecosystem and gives you whole-system monitoring through the Enphase app. The Tesla Powerwall 3 also works well here as an AC-coupled option.

What We Check on a Site Visit

Before we quote a battery retrofit, we do a site visit. Here's what we look at:

  • Inverter make, model, and age — this tells us which batteries are compatible and whether the inverter needs replacing

  • Available switchboard space — older Northern Beaches homes often have smaller switchboards, and a battery installation may require a switchboard upgrade

  • Phase supply — single-phase homes are most common on the Northern Beaches; three-phase supply opens up more inverter options

  • Roof and meter box condition — we check these aren't going to create problems during or after the installation

Which Batteries Does Energy Culture Install?

We install three battery systems, each suited to a different setup:

  • Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) — AC-coupled, works with any inverter. Often the simplest retrofit option because it doesn't require replacing your existing inverter.

  • Sungrow SBR battery — DC-coupled, pairs with Sungrow hybrid inverters. Best value if you're already on a Sungrow system or upgrading your inverter at the same time.

  • Enphase Encharge — AC-coupled, integrates natively with Enphase microinverter systems. Ideal if you're on an Enphase IQ setup.

Will I Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

Many older Northern Beaches homes do need a switchboard upgrade when adding a battery. Whether yours does depends on the age of your board, the number of circuits, and the type of protection already in place. Switchboard upgrades start from $3,500. We confirm this on the site visit, not during quoting — there's no point speculating until we can see the board.

What's the Process?

Battery retrofits are not complicated jobs when the setup is right. Here's how it goes:

  1. Site assessment — we check your inverter, switchboard, meter box and roof

  2. Quote — itemised, with options if there's a choice between systems

  3. Approval — you confirm and we book the install date

  4. Installation — typically one day for the battery, including any switchboard work
